US Treasury Launches 'Economic D-Day' Against Iran

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has unveiled Operation Economic Outcast, an aggressive campaign targeting Iran’s core financial sectors. The move marks a strategic pivot toward total economic strangulation as Washington attempts to force global compliance with its sanctions regime following the failure to secure a decisive military victory in the region.

The new initiative aims to sever Iran’s access to international markets by targeting five critical sectors: technology, gold, aviation, shipping, and digital assets. During Monday’s announcement, Bessent warned that any entity continuing business with Tehran would face the full weight of American financial power. He stated that the administration expects to sanction a major financial institution as early as next week, signaling an end to what he described as the 'gray spaces' of current US policy. When asked about the potential for massive economic disruption, Bessent acknowledged the risks, questioning why he would want to 'blow up the global financial system' while simultaneously demanding that international partners fall in line.

Foreign capitals have responded with skepticism and defiance. In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian criticized the escalation, warning that such measures threaten global economic stability. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have mocked the campaign, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi questioning why such extreme measures are necessary if, as the Trump administration claims, Iran’s military and nuclear capabilities have already been destroyed. Analysts suggest the move is a gamble to achieve through economic isolation what months of conflict could not, though many warn that the pressure will likely fall on ordinary Iranian citizens rather than the political elite. Critics also fear the policy may backfire, further eroding the dominance of the dollar as nations seek alternatives to avoid US-led financial exclusion.
