Levain Bakery Names New Co-CEOs to Lead National Expansion

After three decades of growth from a single Upper West Side storefront to a national retail footprint, Levain Bakery has appointed Lorna Sommerville and Taya Stenson as co-chief executive officers. The move signals a shift toward shared leadership as the company scales its operations while maintaining its original, artisan-focused identity.

Sommerville and Stenson bring nearly a decade of combined tenure at the bakery, offering a blend of institutional knowledge and external experience. Sommerville, whose background includes senior roles at The Coca-Cola Company and Harry’s, has previously directed the company’s marketing and e-commerce innovation. Stenson, a veteran of nearly twenty years at Starbucks, brings extensive operational expertise from her time managing global retail teams. Together, they are tasked with maintaining the brand's commitment to hand-crafted products while managing a network that has grown to 19 locations nationwide.

The transition comes as the company reports significant financial momentum, having quadrupled its topline sales during the duo's recent tenure. E-commerce now accounts for 25% of total revenue, while seasonal product innovations—such as limited-time cookie offerings—have grown to represent up to 20% of sales. Founders Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald, who established the business in 1995, noted that the new leadership structure reflects a focus on preserving the company’s core culture of hospitality and craftsmanship as it adds two additional bakeries to its current portfolio.
