Marks and Spencer names Paul Loughlin head of analytics

After serving three months in an interim capacity, 17-year company veteran Paul Loughlin has been permanently appointed as Head of Analytics for Retail, Property and Contact Centre at Marks and Spencer. His promotion reflects the retailer’s intensifying focus on data-driven infrastructure rather than superficial front-end technology trends.

Loughlin, who previously held positions including Lead Data and Analytics Manager, steps into the role as M&S continues a quiet but significant digital transformation. The company recently reported sales exceeding £17.4 billion, earmarking £140 million for AI, supply chain automation, and e-commerce improvements. Rather than chasing headline-grabbing consumer features, the retailer is prioritizing the underlying plumbing of its operations, such as pricing models and waste reduction, having already deployed AI tools to 11,000 staff members earlier this year.

Retail technology consultant Claudio B. Landsberg notes that the company's strategy stands out for its deliberate, structural approach. By focusing on clean, connected data, M&S is positioning itself to make better-informed decisions across its vast retail estate. The emphasis remains on durable, long-term infrastructure over experimental front-end gimmicks, suggesting that the 140-year-old brand is effectively treating its internal data environment as its primary competitive advantage.
