Ben Affleck’s Decade-Long Boycott of Bill Maher Earns Online Support

Twelve years after an explosive on-air clash regarding the nature of Islam, Ben Affleck continues to reject invitations to appear on Bill Maher’s "Real Time." While the talk show host recently expressed a desire to find common ground, social media users are rallying behind the actor’s decision to maintain his distance.

Maher addressed the lingering friction during a recent episode of his "Club Random" podcast, admitting that Affleck consistently declines requests to return to his program. The host noted that the 2014 confrontation remains the most frequently discussed moment in his show's history, despite his own assertion that it was not his program's finest hour. While podcaster Sam Harris, who also participated in that heated panel, has since reconciled with the actor, Maher remains on the outside looking in.

Public sentiment has largely favored the actor, with many viewers praising his refusal to engage further as a principled stance against the host's rhetoric. The original 2014 debate saw Affleck visibly agitated as he pushed back against Maher and Harris’s characterization of Islam, famously labeling their generalizations as racist. Reflecting on the incident in 2017, Affleck maintained that his reaction was driven by a fundamental belief that individuals should not be stereotyped based on their faith. For his part, Maher suggested that a private conversation might bridge the gap, yet the actor shows no public indication of letting the matter rest.
