Why Hollywood Won't Cast Shaquille O’Neal as an Action Hero

“I would love to do more action roles, but we were told by top Hollywood executives that I’m too big,” says Shaquille O’Neal. Despite his global fame and stature as an NBA legend, the 7-foot-tall entertainer finds his own celebrity status is the primary barrier to securing serious dramatic parts in major blockbusters.

The core issue, according to O’Neal, is not just his imposing physical size but the immediate recognition factor. When he appears on screen, audiences do not see a character; they see the basketball icon. This makes it difficult for viewers to suspend disbelief, whether he is attempting to portray a doctor or a superhero. Executives at Marvel reportedly echoed this sentiment, admitting they would love to cast him but feared his presence would instantly break the immersion of their films.

This struggle to find a niche in cinema is not entirely new for the former athlete. In 1997, he took the lead in the DC superhero film Steel, which proved to be a critical and commercial failure. Kenneth Johnson, the film’s director, later remarked that while O’Neal was a positive role model, he lacked the specific skills required to carry a major feature as a lead actor. Despite these setbacks and a filmography largely comprised of cameos and minor roles in comedies like Grown Ups 2, O’Neal remains undeterred. He has recently expressed a desire to land a role alongside Dwayne Johnson, jokingly noting his ambition to face off against the star on screen.
