Gravitate Releases Framework for Answer Engine Optimization

As AI-generated answers increasingly displace traditional organic search traffic, businesses are scrambling to secure citations in platforms like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Portland-based agency Gravitate has launched a new research series aimed at moving beyond standard SEO to master the mechanics of AI visibility and citation-based ranking.

The shift in search behavior is measurable and severe. Data from Ahrefs indicates that top-ranking pages experience a 58% drop in clicks when a Google AI Overview appears, while Semrush reports that 83% of AI-assisted searches conclude without a single click. For brands that rely on search for revenue, the traditional playbook is failing. Rory Piecuch, an SEO and AI Search Specialist at Gravitate, argues that brands are not losing due to inferior products, but because their content lacks the structural clarity for AI engines to extract and cite it effectively.

To counter this, the agency’s new guides introduce a 70/30 budget allocation model, advising companies to ring-fence up to 30% of their search spend for AI-specific visibility work. This includes technical implementation of schema markup, answer-first formatting, and entity attribution. The business case for this pivot is supported by conversion metrics; Semrush found that AI-referred visitors convert at 4.4 times the rate of traditional organic traffic, with some high-intent queries seeing that figure climb as high as 23 times. Gravitate is currently offering an AI Readiness Audit to help companies score their pages against 36 visibility factors before adjusting their digital strategies.
