Helcim Secures $53 Million Series C as Traditional Banks Retreat

As Canada’s major financial institutions pull back from small-business merchant services, Calgary-based payments processor Helcim has secured $53 million CAD in Series C funding. The round, led by BDC’s Growth Venture Fund, pushes the company’s valuation to $250 million as it moves to fill a widening market gap.

The capital injection brings Helcim’s total equity raised to $100 million since 2022. This financial milestone arrives alongside significant operational growth: the company now supports over 22,000 active businesses, generates $150 million in annual recurring revenue, and is projected to process nearly $10 billion in annual payments. The infusion will support platform expansion and the development of new financial services tailored for small and mid-market enterprises.

Helcim’s strategy centers on replacing the legacy infrastructure often abandoned by big banks with its own proprietary, transparent pricing model. By building its end-to-end processing technology from scratch, the firm avoids the inflated fees typical of traditional providers. Recent adoption of an AI-powered Payment Extension—which allows merchants to integrate payments into existing software—has further accelerated its market penetration. With backing from new partners like Curql Collective, which represents over 160 credit unions, Helcim is positioning itself as the primary modern alternative for business owners seeking to bypass the limitations of traditional banking merchant services.
