Lululemon searches for new tech lead as retail AI shifts accelerate

Ranju Das has departed his role as Chief AI and Technology Officer at lululemon, marking another high-profile exit in a week defined by rapid digital transformation across the retail sector. His departure leaves a vacancy at the top of the brand's innovation strategy just as peers navigate complex automation rollouts.

The retail landscape continues to evolve through aggressive technology adoption and leadership churn. While lululemon begins its global search for a successor to Das, other major players are pressing ahead with controversial and ambitious infrastructure projects. Sainsbury’s, for instance, has reaffirmed its commitment to Facewatch facial recognition across 200 stores, despite a recent incident where a customer was wrongly flagged for shoplifting. The retailer maintains that the error was human, not technological, citing a 99.98% accuracy rate for the system.

Elsewhere, the focus remains on scale and customer engagement. AllSaints has integrated a new AI-driven platform via Klaviyo to personalize global content, while AS Watson has signed a multi-year deal with NCR Voyix to standardize POS and self-checkout systems across its international brands, including Superdrug. Simultaneously, the delivery sector is seeing a rise in autonomous operations as Wonder and Serve Robotics expand their robot-assisted Grubhub fleet into Chicago, Los Angeles, and Alexandria.

Management shifts also persist beyond lululemon. Co-op Group CTO Robert Elsey is set to exit the business this October following the departure of CEO Shirine Khoury-Haq earlier this year. As these leadership changes unfold, the industry is preparing to gather at the eCommerce Expo 2026 in London, where the dialogue will center on balancing intelligent growth with the practical realities of managing large-scale retail ecosystems.
