Panettiere, known for her role in Remember the Titans, previously detailed a cycle of domestic abuse within their relationship in her memoir, This Is Me. She alleged that Hickerson, an aspiring actor, inflicted injuries so severe that she was unable to leave her home for weeks. In 2019, Hickerson was arrested following reports of domestic injury; he later pleaded no contest in 2020 and received four years of probation. At the time of those disclosures, the actress stated she felt a responsibility to speak out to prevent him from harming others.
