Taylor Sheridan on the Homeless Years Behind His Hollywood Rise

Before he became the architect of the Yellowstone empire and one of the largest landowners in Texas, Taylor Sheridan spent six months living out of his car. In a candid interview, the prolific creator revealed that he chose the uncertainty of vehicle-dwelling over abandoning his creative ambitions.

Sheridan shared these details with Town & Country in August 2026, looking back on a career that began in the mid-1990s with bit parts in shows like Walker, Texas Ranger. During his most difficult periods, he frequently parked in Ojai, California, seeking a safe place to sleep while he pursued acting roles. He admitted he could have easily walked away from his dream to secure steady employment, but he opted to persist through the hardship.

That tenacity eventually led to his breakthrough as a writer. After the success of the 2012 film Hell or High Water, he purchased his first property in Wyoming. His real estate footprint expanded significantly in 2022 when his investment group acquired the historic 267,000-acre 6666 Ranch. Despite industry speculation and prior announcements from Paramount regarding a spin-off series set at the ranch, Sheridan has firmly ruled out the project. He maintains that fictionalizing a working ranch would disrespect the families and cowboys who depend on the land, a responsibility he takes seriously as the property's steward.

While his television footprint remains massive—with recent spin-offs like Marshalls and Dutton Ranch drawing millions of viewers—Sheridan is shifting his professional focus. Following an October 2025 deal, he is set to transition to NBCUniversal. He will continue fulfilling his remaining television obligations at Paramount through 2028, with his full move to the new studio slated for January 2029.
