Dr. Robbie Kröger, founder of The Origins Foundation, joined local field teams to combat the blaze that threatened one of the project's most critical monitoring sites. While seasonal fires are a known risk in the Tete region, the deliberate nature of these infernos has created unprecedented conditions for the Panyame Cheetah Project. By August 17, the team successfully extinguished the fires, confirming that the cheetahs remained unharmed.
Conservationists rely on GPS collar data to track movement patterns, a necessity when environmental disturbances force animals to abandon familiar territories. Kröger emphasized that the event highlights the volatile reality of field work, where immediate intervention determines the survival of protected species. The Origins Foundation continues to provide resources for re-collaring efforts and landscape monitoring, aiming to secure long-term stability for the cheetah population in a region increasingly pressured by human encroachment.
