Equity Tokenization Hits Production Milestone Ahead of DTC Launch

With the global tokenized equity market reaching $2.2 billion in July, the transition from pilot projects to live infrastructure is accelerating. The Depository Trust Company is set to move its tokenization service to full launch this October, forcing brokers worldwide to confront new realities in custody and settlement.

The Turlov Family Office Securities (TFOS) report presented at the 10th Annual SAIFM Regulatory Summit highlights that the "share-as-token" model has exited the theoretical phase. Following SEC approvals for Nasdaq and NYSE earlier this year, the market is now navigating a dual-rail structure: one where the token represents the security itself, and another where derivatives provide exposure without direct ownership. As of July 14, the DTC began limited production activity involving Russell 1000 stocks and US Treasuries, with full-service operations expected to trigger a significant shift in market mechanics by the end of the third quarter.

For South Africa, the landscape presents a distinct challenge. While the FSCA has granted 300 licenses to crypto-asset service providers, the country lacks a dedicated regulatory regime for tokenized securities. Local firms currently occupy a position similar to those in Brazil and Kazakhstan, where crypto regulation has outpaced securities infrastructure. Despite this, the domestic market is testing boundaries, exemplified by RainFin’s issuance of R100 million in tokenized debt on the XCAP Network. TFOS Executive Director Oleksandr Tsyhlin warns that local brokers must decide whether to become architects of these new products or remain mere distributors of international assets.
