VinFast Targets Consumer Psychology with New EV Cost Calculator

A National Bureau of Economic Research study suggests car buyers undervalue future fuel savings, often prioritizing the immediate sticker price over long-term costs. To counter this psychological hurdle, VinFast has launched an interactive tool for U.S. shoppers designed to visualize the total cost of ownership for its electric vehicles.

The calculator addresses a persistent gap in the automotive market: the tendency for consumers to fixate on upfront costs while ignoring the compounding benefits of lower energy and maintenance requirements. While a gas-powered vehicle might appear cheaper on the showroom floor, the math often shifts significantly over a five-year ownership cycle. For instance, a driver covering 2,000 miles per month in a VF 8 Eco could see energy expenses drop to approximately $7,811, compared to $18,528 for a comparable gas-powered SUV—a reduction of roughly 58 percent.

Data from recent studies in Vietnam and the U.S. suggest that transparency regarding these long-term savings directly influences purchasing behavior. Research indicates that when consumers are presented with clear, comparative data on fuel and maintenance, the likelihood of choosing an EV rises. VinFast aims to leverage this by integrating the tool directly into its U.S. digital sales platform, allowing users to input specific mileage habits to generate personalized estimates. By shifting the conversation from the initial price tag to total cost, the company hopes to lower the barrier to entry for prospective electric vehicle owners.
