WHSmith veteran Carl Cowling named CEO of cross-border firm ESW

Cross-border commerce specialist ESW has appointed former WHSmith Group CEO Carl Cowling to lead the firm starting in early September. Cowling steps into the role following an 11-year tenure at the travel retail group, succeeding Eric Eichmann, who departs after three years at the helm of the commerce platform.

ESW Chairperson Marc Pontet described the transition as a move toward a new phase of growth, citing Cowling’s dual background in retail and international operations as essential for the company's next chapter. Pontet noted that the incoming CEO brings the necessary discipline to manage the company's complex, multi-market global footprint.

Cowling, who oversaw WHSmith’s operations across 30 countries, plans to prioritize direct engagement with clients to identify new areas for investment and strategic value. He highlighted ESW’s focus on agentic commerce as a key driver for his decision, noting that his experience on the retail side of the partnership provides him with a clear view of the demands brands place on their commerce providers today.
