BioArctic and Mesenkia join forces to combat glioblastoma

Stockholm-based BioArctic and Mesenkia Therapeutics have entered a research partnership to develop a novel antibody treatment for glioblastoma. The collaboration aims to overcome the significant challenge of delivering large-molecule drugs across the blood-brain barrier by leveraging BioArctic’s proprietary BrainTransporter technology alongside Mesenkia’s specialized KITAIbodies platform.

The project focuses on targeting HVEM, a protein expressed on the surface of glioblastoma tumor cells and stem cells linked to treatment resistance and recurrence. By pairing BioArctic’s transport mechanism with Mesenkia’s antibody, the companies intend to create a drug candidate capable of reaching aggressive brain tumors more effectively. The partners will begin with preclinical studies to validate the concept before determining subsequent development paths.

For BioArctic, this agreement marks a strategic shift beyond its traditional focus on neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS. CEO Gunilla Osswald noted that the venture aims to address the poor prognosis associated with glioblastoma by attacking key disease-driving mechanisms. Mesenkia CEO Moa Fransson added that the partnership bridges the gap between antibody expertise and effective delivery, potentially offering new hope for patients facing one of the most treatment-resistant forms of cancer.
