Kitakyushu’s Coming-of-Age Rebels Take Over Japan House London

Kitakyushu’s Coming-of-Age Rebels Take Over Japan House London

Platform sandals, fur-trimmed kimono, and gravity-defying hairstyles are set to transform Japan House London this November. The exhibition, Tradition/Rebellion, explores the flamboyant fashion subculture of Kitakyushu, where 20-year-olds mark their transition into adulthood by rejecting conventional formality in favor of theatrical, high-stakes self-expression.

While Coming-of-Age Day is a nationwide holiday across Japan, the industrial port city of Kitakyushu has turned the annual milestone into a spectacle of individuality. Starting 11 November 2026, the London exhibition will showcase how this local tradition merges contemporary street style with a 14th-century aesthetic known as basara—a philosophy rooted in luxury and the defiance of social norms. The display highlights the stories of eight young adults, tracing their journey from the months of saving and meticulous planning to the final, vibrant reveal.

Beyond the costumes, the exhibition examines the specialized local industry that sustains this phenomenon. From kimono rental houses to dedicated hair stylists and photographers, a network of artisans works tirelessly to realize the visions of the city’s youth. Co-curated by fashion director Yamaguchi Souta and Japan House London’s Simon Wright, the project aims to move past the surface-level color and chaos to reveal the heartfelt motivations behind the outfits, whether that means honoring a parent’s legacy or simply claiming the title of the best-dressed in Japan.
