Distributed Sun Launches trutility to Accelerate Energy Infrastructure

The U.S. electricity market faces a crisis of speed rather than scarcity, prompting the launch of trutility. Backed by Distributed Sun, the new platform aims to industrialize energy deployment by integrating battery storage, community solar, and microgrids into an autonomous system designed to reduce interconnection timelines from years to months.

The new venture inherits over $1 billion in capital investment and a decade of proprietary data from Distributed Sun and its subsidiary, trucurrent. By leveraging AI-driven decision sciences, trutility seeks to replace traditional, slow-moving energy development processes with automated underwriting and policy analysis. The company claims these engines can compress 30-day manual tasks into hours, providing liquid, reliable power for large-load customers.

Distributed Sun leadership points to a track record of high returns, noting an average 9.2x multiple on invested capital for development assets since 2019. The portfolio already includes GWh-scale battery storage and microgrids across 14 utility territories. A recent project, an EV fleet-charging microgrid developed under PG&E’s Flex Connect program, reached completion in just four months—a timeline the company says is two years faster than conventional industry standards. trutility plans to manage these assets for their full economic life, emphasizing a shift toward long-term ownership and bond-like yields.
