Trump Escalates Threats to Revoke Broadcast Licenses Over Negative Coverage

President Donald Trump signaled a new phase in his confrontation with the media on Thursday, suggesting that news outlets providing him with what he termed "bad press" should face the revocation of their broadcast licenses, a declaration that follows recent administrative pressure on network programming.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump claimed that television networks have been overwhelmingly negative toward his administration. He cited an unsubstantiated statistic that coverage has been 97% unfavorable, arguing that such outlets are not entitled to their licenses. The president indicated he would defer these regulatory decisions to Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr, who has previously warned broadcasters against airing content he deems distorted.

This rhetoric arrives on the heels of an incident involving ABC, which pulled Jimmy Kimmel’s program following threats from the FCC regarding the network's local affiliates. While the president’s threats are politically charged, FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez dismissed the legal foundation for such actions. Gomez, the sole Democrat on the commission, stated that the agency lacks the constitutional authority to strip licenses based on editorial content. She characterized the administration’s strategy as a deliberate campaign of censorship, aiming to force broadcasters into compliance through the fear of lengthy and costly regulatory battles.
