Volunteer Fire Departments Secure $1.5 Million in Safety Grants

With 82 percent of American fire departments relying on volunteer labor, a persistent budget gap often leaves responders with aging gear. To bridge this divide, State Farm and the National Volunteer Fire Council have awarded $10,000 grants to 150 departments across 43 states, totaling a $1.5 million investment in community safety.

The funding, announced on Volunteer Firefighters Recognition Day, targets the critical equipment shortages that hinder emergency responses. Departments will utilize the capital to acquire essential personal protective gear, rescue tools, and modern communication devices. Since the program’s inception in 2024, the initiative has distributed $4 million to support local crews who handle everything from wildland fires to hazardous material incidents.

NVFC Chair Steve Hirsch noted that many local agencies are currently forced to operate with insufficient or outdated equipment due to limited municipal funding. Beyond the direct grants, State Farm has provided complimentary NVFC memberships to the first 2,000 applicants, granting responders access to specialized training and support services. The partners plan to highlight these local units during community engagement events scheduled throughout the fall.
