Syzygy Plasmonics Targets Latin American SAF Market with IFC Partnership

In a bid to decarbonize aviation, Houston-based Syzygy Plasmonics has secured a framework agreement with the International Finance Corporation to scale its light-driven sustainable fuel technology across Latin America. The partnership aims to transform regional biogas resources into commercial-scale aviation fuel, starting with an inaugural facility in Uruguay.

The collaboration centers on NovaSAF-1, a facility planned for Durazno, Uruguay, which serves as the testing ground for Syzygy’s proprietary reactors. By replacing traditional fossil-fuel heat with renewable electricity, the company claims its process can slash lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90 percent. IFC will provide technical and commercial advisory services to assist in navigating the complexities of emerging markets and mobilizing private capital.

Syzygy has already secured significant commercial backing to de-risk its expansion. Trafigura has signed a binding offtake agreement for the entire output of the NovaSAF-1 plant, while Trafigura and World Fuel Services have reserved capacity for subsequent regional sites. With feedstock secured from partners like Estancias del Lago, the company is targeting one million metric tons of annual production capacity in Brazil by 2035. While the IFC provides a strategic seal of approval, specific project investments remain subject to final board appraisals and standard environmental vetting.
