Canadian Solar Wins Patent Dispute Against Maxeon

A long-running legal battle over solar cell technology has ended in favor of Canadian Solar Inc. after a federal court dismissed a patent infringement lawsuit brought by Maxeon Solar Pte. Ltd. The decision concludes proceedings that challenged the company's proprietary TOPCon manufacturing processes in the United States.

The litigation, which originated in March 2024, centered on three specific patents. Following a series of challenges, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit vacated a previous Patent Trial and Appeal Board decision, while the Federal District Court dismissed the case with prejudice. Earlier, in January 2026, the board had already ruled that the claims asserted by Maxeon were invalid.

Colin Parkin, Chief Executive Officer of Canadian Solar, stated that the resolution affirms the company's competitive standing and its commitment to intellectual property. Canadian Solar, which has delivered nearly 177 GW of modules globally since its 2001 founding, intends to leverage this legal clarity to continue its expansion in high-performance solar and energy storage markets.
