Hakeem Jeffries Faces Backlash Over Medicare for All Opposition

Democratic House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries ignited a firestorm Sunday by confirming he does not support Medicare for All, creating a sharp disconnect with a base that increasingly demands universal healthcare and aggressive political combat from its leadership.

During an appearance on NBC’s "Meet the Press," Jeffries explicitly stated he does not co-sponsor or support the legislation. His refusal to back the measure comes despite a new CBS/YouGov poll indicating that 90% of Democratic voters want the party to prioritize passing universal coverage. The poll also highlighted that 83% of respondents prefer the party to "fight for people" over focusing solely on detailed, incremental policy proposals.

Critics were quick to label the leader out of touch. Progressive journalist Mehdi Hasan questioned his position, while David Sirota of The Lever noted that such stances explain the growing frustration among the party's rank-and-file members. The policy's popularity is bolstered by a recent Yale University study, which estimated that a Medicare for All system could save 114,000 lives annually and reduce healthcare spending by $1 trillion per year.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), a prominent co-sponsor of the House bill, publicly diverged from Jeffries following the interview. Khanna argued that the policy is a vital economic and moral priority that warrants a floor vote, emphasizing that the majority of House Democrats would likely support it. Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) reiterated his stance that the current system is fundamentally broken, serving corporate profits rather than the public, and urged the party to finally embrace the mandate supported by 64% of Americans.
