AI Leadership and Automation Shifts Define Global Retail Tech

Retailers are accelerating their digital transformation, with Target appointing its inaugural Chief AI Officer and European chains like Supermercados El Jamón and Ocado rolling out large-scale automation. As the industry integrates generative tools and robotics, the focus shifts from experimental pilots to core infrastructure and enterprise-wide operational efficiency.

Target has moved to secure its AI future by hiring Chandhu Nair, formerly of Lowe’s, as its first-ever Chief AI Officer. The move mirrors a broader trend among major grocers: Sainsbury’s has appointed James Anstruther to lead its own AI Centre of Excellence, while Kroger has tapped Jet.com co-founder Nate Faust as its new Chief E-commerce Officer to refine its digital footprint.

Automation remains a central pillar of this week’s activity. Ocado Group launched its first automated customer fulfilment centre in South Korea with Lotte Shopping, incorporating new freezer technology capable of operating at -25°C. Simultaneously, AutoStore has formalized a global supply agreement with Amazon, providing a framework for the retail giant to procure its automation solutions. In Spain, Supermercados El Jamón is embarking on a three-year project to install nearly three million electronic shelf labels from Hanshow, signaling a major commitment to in-store digital modernization.
