Amazon Teamsters Push for New York Logistics Safety Bill

The proposed legislation targets Amazon’s "Delivery Service Partner" (DSP) system, which critics argue allows the retail giant to evade legal responsibility for workplace injuries and labor violations. By requiring companies to hire delivery staff directly, the bill aims to eliminate the buffer that currently shields Amazon from accountability for its employment practices in the five boroughs.

Councilmember Tiffany Cabán, the bill's author, emphasized that the current arrangement operates with impunity, often at the expense of worker safety and community well-being. Proponents, including the Teamsters and the New York City Central Labor Council, contend that the "wild west" business model has directly contributed to rising injury rates as the company’s local footprint expands. While Amazon maintains that such regulations could lead to service reductions or higher costs, union leaders frame these warnings as corporate tactics designed to protect profit margins rather than consumer interests. With 34 council members now co-sponsoring the measure, the coalition is calling for an immediate vote to codify direct employment standards and formalize corporate liability.
