The demonstration, broadcast live on August 12, showcased the system’s ability to manage the '3D' conditions of a warehouse—dull, dirty, and dangerous work that typically relies on human labor to handle overlapping boxes and hidden labels. Unlike traditional automation, which often falters in unstructured environments, the WALL-B model allows the robot to adapt in real-time. It does not rely on rigid, pre-programmed rules; instead, it assesses the physical state of a pile, determines the optimal grasp, and intervenes to correct misrouted items as they arise.
CEO Wang Qian emphasized that the system is built for the reality of the floor rather than the clean, idealized conditions of a laboratory. The hardware, a custom 6-axis arm, performs complex maneuvers—flipping, flattening, and reorienting packages to ensure barcodes face scanners correctly. By smoothing soft packaging and squaring up boxes before they hit the conveyor, the system reduces the downstream errors that currently plague manual sorting operations. For X Square Robot, this project serves as a practical proof-of-concept for its broader mission: moving embodied AI from theoretical research into high-throughput industrial workflows.
