Aaron Sorkin Targets Facebook’s Influence in The Social Reckoning

Sixteen years after chronicling Facebook’s collegiate origins, writer-director Aaron Sorkin is returning to the platform to examine its societal impact. With his upcoming film, The Social Reckoning, Sorkin argues that the social media giant has spiraled into a dangerous entity, directly linking its engagement algorithms to the January 6 Capitol attack.

Sorkin points to the platform’s shift in how it weights user interaction as the catalyst for systemic instability. By prioritizing rage-inducing content—where a share holds thirty times the value of a simple like—the company effectively poisoned the public discourse. According to the director, this algorithmic reliance on outrage created a environment where objective truth, such as basic mathematical or scientific facts, became secondary to emotional manipulation.

While Sorkin maintains that Mark Zuckerberg likely never intended for his creation to have a corrosive effect, he insists the platform has moved beyond its founder’s control. The new film, set for release on October 9, focuses on the 2021 whistleblower disclosures by Frances Haugen. By dramatizing the internal documents that revealed a prioritization of profit over user safety, Sorkin aims to hold the company accountable for its role in spreading misinformation and harming mental health. Despite his public criticism of Zuckerberg, Sorkin claims he approached the character with professional empathy, framing the script as a defense of the CEO’s actions before a higher authority.
