Morrisons brings AI-powered smart trolleys to Preston store

Shoppers in Preston are testing the future of grocery retail as Morrisons introduces Instacart’s Caper Cart smart trolleys. This deployment marks the first time the North American firm has brought its AI-driven shopping technology to the UK market, with the retailer launching an outdoor media campaign to drive local awareness.

The smart trolleys feature integrated sensors that automatically identify items as they are placed in the basket, including real-time weighing of fresh produce. A built-in touchscreen provides customers with a running total of their spending, personalized product recommendations, and a portal to scan their Morrisons More Card for loyalty discounts. To complete the transaction, users scan a barcode from the trolley screen at a dedicated checkout lane, bypassing traditional manual scanning.

Morrisons has partnered with Bauer Media Outdoor UK to promote the trial, aiming to familiarize customers with the automated hardware. Steve Newbould, Head of Commercial for Data & Media at Morrisons, noted that the initiative seeks to make the in-store experience as intelligent and personalized as online shopping. Gordon Macpherson, Productivity Director at the retailer, emphasized that the goal is to provide shoppers with better visibility of their budgets and a more seamless transit through the aisles.
