The revelation came during an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, where Jackson discussed the emotional weight behind her song “Sirens.” She recounted how the emergency occurred when she was approximately 20 years old. Despite her training, she described the human instinct to freeze during a crisis as a significant mental hurdle, noting that the situation was a gamble between her learned skills and her brain’s fight-or-flight response.
Paramedics informed Jackson that her intervention was the only thing preventing her friend from dying or suffering irreversible brain damage. Despite the trauma of the event, Jackson admitted that it did not immediately catalyze her path to sobriety. She continued using substances for another year and a half, eventually realizing that even her attempts to move away from harder drugs were ineffective while she still consumed marijuana and alcohol. She reached a breaking point, concluding that she had to eliminate all intoxicating substances to avoid a relapse into heroin use.
Beyond her recovery, Jackson addressed her shifting outlook on romantic relationships. She reflected on a past engagement marked by mutual drug use and discussed her more recent separation from bandmate Justin Long. Relying on a support system of therapists and friends, she shifted her perspective on what constitutes a viable partnership. Jackson now emphasizes that being a "good person" is insufficient if her core needs are not met, and she intends to maintain higher standards for her future relationships.
