Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa framed the initiative as a decisive decade for the country’s market transformation. The government’s blueprint targets the addition of 105 GW of new capacity, incorporating solar, wind, nuclear, and battery storage. To stabilize this grid, the plan requires 14,500 kilometers of new transmission lines, an expansion estimated at R440 billion over the next ten years.
POWERCHINA, which has operated in the region since 2008, serves as a primary partner for these ambitions. With 1.9 GW of renewable capacity already completed or underway, the firm is currently building key infrastructure like the 100 MW Redstone concentrated solar facility and the Oya hybrid energy platform. Beyond power, the company is managing the Mokolo-Crocodile Water Augmentation Project, designed to deliver 75 million cubic meters of water annually to support the Medupi and Matimba power stations.
President Wang Xiaojun emphasized that the collaboration extends beyond construction. By integrating local procurement and technical training, such as the welding center established at the Redstone site, the partnership aims to build a sustainable industrial supply chain. This conference serves as the foundation for a formal South Africa-China Energy Investment Partnership intended to bridge the gap between planning and project implementation.
