Emile Hirsch Trolls 007 Fans With Absurdist Casting Prank

The hunt for the next James Bond has reached such a fever pitch of speculation that actor Emile Hirsch decided to test the internet’s gullibility. On August 10, he shared a forged offer letter from Eon Productions, claiming he had been tapped to play the iconic spy in a bizarre crossover.

The letter, which Hirsch posted to social media, cited his "intellect" and "intensity" as reasons for his selection. The punchline, however, revealed the studio’s supposed plan to send 007 into the Shire to track down "terrorist hobbits." While the gag was transparent to most, Hirsch claimed on August 11 that some fans reacted with genuine confusion. He doubled down on the bit by posting a follow-up letter that feigned outrage over his leak, proposing a new franchise title, "007: Return of The Short King," and suggesting he undergo surgery to extend his legs.

While Hirsch’s satire poked fun at the intense obsession surrounding the vacancy left by Daniel Craig, the actual search is nearing a conclusion. Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed that auditions are underway, with producers Amy Pascal and Nina Gold overseeing a deliberate casting process. Unlike the high-profile names often circulated online—such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson or Henry Cavill—industry reports suggest the studio is prioritizing rising talent over established stars. Pascal recently indicated that the team is seeking a "really different" take on the character, with an official announcement potentially arriving before the end of the year.
