Julie Andrews Declines Role in The Princess Diaries 3

After decades of iconic performances, Julie Andrews is stepping away from the spotlight. The 90-year-old Hollywood legend confirmed she turned down an invitation to reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the upcoming third installment of The Princess Diaries, citing her retirement from acting as the primary reason.

Andrews revealed in an August 2026 interview with InStyle that while the production team approached her throughout the previous year, she ultimately decided to decline. She described the choice as difficult but necessary, noting that she had a wonderful experience with the franchise and believes the new film will flourish without her involvement. Her last live-action screen appearance dates back to 2017, though she has remained active in voice work for projects like Bridgerton and the Despicable Me series.

Meanwhile, production on the sequel continues under the guidance of Anne Hathaway. The project, which officially entered development in 2022 with screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji, recently reached a narrative breakthrough. Hathaway, currently balancing her career with her third pregnancy, confirmed that the team opted to restart the script with a new direction to ensure the quality of the final product. While a specific release date remains uncertain, Hathaway expressed confidence that the current version of the film is the right path forward for the franchise.
