Jury Awards $61.5 Million to Watson Grinding Explosion Survivors

The January 24, 2020, explosion occurred after a propylene gas leak went undetected inside the Houston facility, resulting in three deaths and widespread property destruction. During the trial, plaintiffs argued that 3M bore significant liability for the malfunctioning warning system, asserting the company knew of defects prior to the incident. This decision marks the third successful jury verdict for community members across four trials involving the manufacturer.

Lead trial counsel Adam Lewis of Arnold & Itkin emphasized that the ruling serves as a warning against corporate negligence regarding safety standards. With over six years of litigation behind them, the survivors secured this outcome as nearly 2,000 additional claims remain pending in Harris County courts. A new series of trials is currently scheduled for October, continuing the legal battle for those affected by the plant disaster.
