PetSmart Charities Launches Veterinary Fellowship to Expand Care Access

The initiative represents a strategic component of a $100 million commitment aimed at addressing the systemic shortage of accessible veterinary services. By partnering with five prominent universities—Colorado State, Cornell, the University of Arizona, UC Davis, and the University of Minnesota—the program targets students already dedicated to serving underserved populations. The inaugural cohort of 15 fellows will receive financial support, mentorship, and structured professional development that extends four years beyond their graduation.

Dr. Robyn Jaynes, director of veterinary affairs at PetSmart Charities, described the effort as a long-term strategy to build a collaborative network of practitioners. By the spring of 2032, the organization expects to have produced 115 graduates specifically trained in community medicine. Projections suggest these practitioners will facilitate more than 550,000 additional veterinary visits annually, directly addressing the financial constraints that currently force many pet owners to forgo professional care.
