South Africa Courts Chinese Investment for R2.2 Trillion Energy Push

South Africa is seeking to unlock R2.2 trillion in energy investment through 2039, bringing together government and industry leaders at the POWERCHINA headquarters in Beijing. The initiative aims to overhaul the nation’s power grid, incorporating 105 GW of new capacity to stabilize a system long plagued by instability.

Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa framed the current shift as a decisive decade for South Africa’s energy market. Under the Integrated Resource Plan 2025, the government intends to expand its generation mix to include solar, wind, battery storage, natural gas, and nuclear power. This roadmap requires a massive infrastructure upgrade, including the construction of 14,500 kilometers of new transmission lines at an estimated cost of R440 billion.

POWERCHINA, which has operated in the country since 2008, currently manages projects with a combined capacity of 1.9 GW, including the Redstone concentrated solar power facility. President Wang Xiaojun confirmed the firm’s intent to move beyond planning, emphasizing a focus on local procurement and technical training. Beyond generation, the partnership extends to critical water infrastructure, such as the Mokolo-Crocodile Water Augmentation Project, designed to secure supply for power stations and industrial hubs. These efforts are expected to provide the framework for a formal, long-term South Africa-China Energy Investment Partnership.
