The study, titled 'Normal Tissue Dosimetry of Intraperitoneal Radium-224-Microparticle Therapy,' analyzed nine patients enrolled in Phase 1 trials at The Norwegian Radium Hospital. Because traditional imaging methods often struggle to track alpha therapy particles, researchers utilized a combination of blood sampling and biokinetic modeling to map radiation distribution.
Caroline Stokke, the study's senior author and Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics at Oslo University Hospital, noted that these methods were critical for identifying potential dose-limiting tissues. The findings confirmed that absorbed doses to the kidneys and red bone marrow—organs typically sensitive to radiation—stayed within safe margins. Oncoinvent Chief Medical Officer Kari Myren emphasized that this low exposure profile validates the company's approach to treating abdominal cancer cells after surgery, offering a viable path forward for patients with limited therapeutic options.
