Amazon’s Texas Data Center Plans Spark Massive Pollution Concerns

The proposed GW Ranch site, developed by Pacifico Energy, is permitted to emit up to 33 million tons of carbon annually. This figure dwarfs the 16 million tons produced by the James H. Miller Jr. Power Plant in Alabama, currently the nation's largest emitter. With 35 natural gas turbines planned, the project threatens to significantly worsen regional air quality and increase health risks, including asthma and respiratory illness, for local residents.

Amazon insists the facility will remain disconnected from the state grid to avoid impacting household utility costs, though company spokespeople confirmed plans to eventually integrate with the grid as capacity allows. Advocates at the Climate Action Campaign argue the project represents a retreat from corporate sustainability promises. Margie Alt, director of the group, labeled the decision a failure to invest in clean energy despite the company's 2040 net-zero pledges. While the developers point to future goals of adding 750 megawatts of solar capacity, public opposition to the environmental and resource footprint of AI infrastructure continues to grow across the country.
