Dave Cain Appointed Head of Martech at Sainsbury's

Dave Cain has joined Sainsbury's as Head of Martech, tasked with overseeing the grocery retailer's evolving marketing technology ecosystem. Cain arrives from LKQ UK & Ireland, where he previously directed digital strategy, innovation, and performance operations across the automotive group’s various subsidiaries.

Cain steps into the role as the supermarket chain intensifies its integration of digital tools within physical retail environments. Reflecting on the appointment, Cain noted that the retail sector is moving at an unprecedented pace and expressed his intent to help steer the future of the company's MarTech infrastructure.

This leadership change coincides with Sainsbury’s broader efforts to deploy AI-driven solutions, including a planned rollout of Facewatch facial recognition software to over 150 locations before the end of the year. While the retailer maintains that the technology has successfully identified repeat offenders during trials, the implementation has faced scrutiny. Earlier this year, a customer at an Elephant and Castle store was wrongly approached by staff after being misidentified, an incident the company attributed to human error rather than a failure of the software itself.
