During an August 6 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Gillis recounted his mother’s decision to prioritize a trip to Croatia over his milestone performance. While the 38-year-old comic entertained a record-breaking crowd that included guests like Dave Chappelle, Jason Kelce, and Meek Mill, his mother sent well-wishes from abroad. Gillis noted that she texted him, “My heart’s with you,” while he prepared to make comedy history.
The path to such a massive stage was far from linear for the performer. Gillis candidly described his younger self as a “depressed” individual who struggled through a brief stint at the United States Military Academy and an unsuccessful tenure at Elon University. After failing out of school and quitting football, he recalled his parents labeling him “a loser.” His career has since remained defined by a reputation for pushing boundaries, marked by a turbulent 2019 firing from Saturday Night Live following the surfacing of old, offensive audio clips and his frequent, biting commentary on figures like Donald Trump.
