Laurel and Thomson Reuters Partner to Quantify Legal AI Returns

Law firms struggling to bridge the gap between AI adoption and financial performance now have a new diagnostic tool. Laurel and Thomson Reuters have launched a partnership designed to track how AI-driven tasks influence billable hours, matter profitability, and the overall business value of legal technology investments.

The collaboration integrates Laurel’s passive work intelligence platform directly with Thomson Reuters’ ecosystem, including CoCounsel Legal. By monitoring activity across email, document management, and communication applications in the background, the system automatically logs time and categorizes work by client and matter. This data allows firm leaders to move beyond simple usage statistics and assess the tangible return on investment for their AI tools.

For attorneys, the system aims to reduce manual administrative burdens while offering partners and finance teams a live view of matter economics. According to the companies, firms utilizing Laurel have reported recovering up to 30 minutes of billable time per attorney each day, alongside revenue increases of 4% to 11%. Ryan Alshak, CEO of Laurel, noted that the partnership effectively merges the practice of law with business operations, providing a clear picture of whether AI investments are yielding expected results. As legal organizations face pressure to justify technology spending, this integration provides a mechanism to demonstrate efficiency gains and identify profitability risks while work is still in progress.
