The robotics industry has struggled to balance high-performance needs with the physical constraints of multi-axis joints, such as wrists, elbows, and knees. Engineers often rely on manual assembly and hand-soldering for these tight spaces, which creates significant production bottlenecks and increases the risk of mechanical failure. By integrating 15.0A power delivery and 1Gbps Ethernet communication into a single, compact interface, the new Molex platform allows for a 50% reduction in required routing area.
Brian Hauge, president of Consumer and Commercial Solutions at Molex, noted that the connector replaces tedious manual labor with a streamlined, pre-terminated solution. This shift is critical as robots scale to include approximately 50 articulated joint actuators, which account for up to 60% of a humanoid robot's total bill of materials. The system features both vertical and right-angle orientations to minimize cable strain during the constant flexing required of autonomous machines. Evaluation samples are available now, with full-scale production expected to commence in late 2026.
