Founded in 1986 by pediatric nephrologist Dr. Bradley Warady, the program was born from a simple observation: children with chronic kidney disease were often excluded from the traditional summer experience due to their rigorous medical requirements. By integrating comprehensive clinical oversight from Children’s Mercy into a standard camp environment, Dr. Warady created a space where dialysis needs do not preclude swimming, hiking, or campfires.
The impact of this environment extends beyond physical recreation. For campers like 13-year-old Emmitt P., the camp offers a rare sense of normalcy, providing a community where visible scars and shared medical histories foster connection rather than isolation. This psychosocial support has become the program’s hallmark, with many former campers returning as counselors to guide the next generation. As Dr. Warady notes, the goal is to address the whole child, ensuring that medical safety acts as a foundation for joy rather than a barrier to it. Today, the program remains free for all participating families, sustained by donors and volunteers who continue to uphold the mission of ensuring no child faces their kidney journey alone.
