Senate Democrats and Watchdogs Mount Last-Ditch Effort to Block Blanche

With the Senate Judiciary Committee voting along party lines to advance Todd Blanche’s nomination, a coalition of Democrats and advocacy groups is now pressuring the full chamber to reject the acting attorney general, citing his history as Donald Trump’s personal lawyer and concerns over his commitment to institutional independence.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) led the charge against the nomination, asserting that Blanche has enabled the most corrupt administration in U.S. history. Critics point to his support for a $1.8 billion fund, his handling of Jeffrey Epstein-related files—which victims described as dismissive—and his history of withholding evidence in civil rights investigations as disqualifying factors. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) labeled him the most discreditable candidate to ever seek the office, noting that Blanche himself has admitted he does not view the Justice Department as independent from the president.

While Republicans hold a 53-47 majority, the absence of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) narrows the path to confirmation. Opponents argue that just three GOP defectors are needed to stop the appointment. Advocacy leaders, including those from Public Citizen and the Not Above the Law coalition, warn that Blanche’s recent promises to dismantle the controversial slush fund are unenforceable. As the full Senate prepares for a vote, these groups contend that Blanche remains fundamentally beholden to his former client rather than the American public.
