On Monday, U.S. Southern Command announced the formation of the Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, a new command structure designed to institutionalize the "maximum pressure" strategy against regional cartels. Analysts view this move as a significant escalation in security policy that places increased focus on Colombia and Venezuela, replacing the previous Joint Task Force Southern Spear with a more permanent and geographically expansive military footprint.
