Fort Washington Medical Center hits infection prevention milestones

For over 1,000 days, Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center has recorded zero cases of Clostridioides difficile infection. The facility, currently the only Leapfrog A-rated hospital in Prince George's County, also surpassed 600 consecutive days without a single catheter-associated urinary tract infection, marking a significant victory in clinical safety standards.

These metrics represent key indicators in the evaluation criteria used by The Leapfrog Group, which monitors how effectively hospitals mitigate patient injuries and infections. By maintaining these infection-free streaks, the facility has reinforced its standing as a leader in regional patient care quality.

Fiona McMahon, director of Quality and Safety Services, attributed the success to a collaborative approach involving physicians, nurses, and environmental services staff. She specifically credited the oversight of Infection Preventionist Tatyana Makarevich for steering the hospital's rigorous safety protocols. Since joining the Adventist HealthCare system in 2019, the 400-member team has focused on standardizing these outcomes to ensure consistent patient protection across all departments.
