Autonomous Cleaning and AI Carts: Retail Tech’s Latest Milestones

Tesco has finalized the initial phase of a massive automation rollout, deploying cleaning robots across 600 Express stores to handle routine floor maintenance. This deployment, the largest of its kind in the UK convenience sector, highlights a broader industry shift toward integrating robotics and AI to reshape the modern shopping experience.

The project, managed by ICE, utilizes co-bots designed to work alongside human staff, allowing store teams to prioritize customer service over manual labor. Tabitha Gafencu, Project Manager at Tesco, described the effort as a complex collaboration involving shift leaders, engineers, and suppliers to ensure a consistent, data-backed standard of cleanliness across the network.

Simultaneously, Morrisons has begun testing Instacart’s Caper smart trolleys in Preston. These AI-powered units automatically recognize items and weigh fresh produce in real-time, offering customers a running basket total. This move marks Instacart’s first foray into the UK market with its smart cart solution, signaling a growing appetite for in-store digital personalization. Elsewhere, Butlin's has introduced 119 automated self-serve bar terminals, claiming a global first for a holiday resort operator, while Homebase USA is scaling its use of Tally robots chain-wide after a pilot program significantly reduced pricing errors and out-of-stock incidents.
