The smart trolleys feature integrated touchscreens that display a running budget while suggesting relevant products to customers in real time. Users can scan their Morrisons More Card directly on the device to apply loyalty discounts before completing their purchase at a dedicated checkout lane. David McIntosh, Chief Connected Stores Officer at Instacart, described the rollout as a new era for physical retail, aiming to replicate the efficiency of online shopping within the aisle.
Gordon Macpherson, Productivity Director at Morrisons, noted that the trial seeks to make the weekly shop more seamless and rewarding for customers across Lancashire. Beyond the Morrisons pilot, the retail technology landscape is shifting rapidly: Tesco recently finalized the deployment of autonomous floor-cleaning robots across 600 Express stores, while DoorDash has secured FAA certification to launch its own drone delivery program. Meanwhile, the fashion sector continues to experiment with virtual spaces, as Coach expands its digital apparel collection within The Sims 4.
