Sierra Leone Launches First Major Solar-Storage Grid Project

The project introduces 35MWh of energy storage capacity to a network that previously relied on a single 161kV transmission line. With only 16% of the population currently connected to electricity, the initiative aims to expand national access to 36%. By integrating eight PowerTitan units, the facility provides critical black start capabilities, allowing it to function as an independent microgrid when the main supply fails.

Construction faced significant hurdles, including weak grid conditions and limited commercial financing options. Sungrow’s modular design allowed for pre-commissioning before delivery, effectively cutting on-site construction time by half. Beyond technical stabilization, the project has generated approximately 100 local jobs, providing immediate economic relief in a region where electricity remains a luxury for the majority of citizens. Government officials credited the success to the reliability of the hardware and the ability to navigate the country’s high-risk operating environment.
