The American Trucking Associations (ATA) is backing the effort, with President and CEO Chris Spear highlighting the alignment between military discipline and the demands of professional driving. The program directly addresses industry bottlenecks by doubling the eligibility window for expedited commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) to 24 months post-service. Additionally, it expands access to the FMCSA’s Even Exchange program, allowing veterans to swap military credentials for civilian licenses more efficiently.
Private sector leaders are already reporting success with similar recruitment models. Nathan Meisgeier, president of Werner Enterprises, noted that military-connected staff now comprise 15% of his company’s 14,000-person workforce—triple the national average. Through Freedom Haulers, the administration intends to coordinate federal agencies and private carriers to provide tuition assistance and specialized training for those who did not operate heavy-duty vehicles during their active-duty tenure.
