Tennessee House Expels Two Democrats After Gun Control Protest

Republicans successfully ousted Representatives Justin Jones and Justin J. Pearson in separate votes of 72-25 and 69-26. Both men, who are Black, had joined a third colleague, Representative Gloria Johnson, in interrupting a session to demand legislative action on firearms. While Jones and Pearson were removed, the GOP-led chamber failed to reach the two-thirds threshold required to expel Johnson, who is white. When questioned later about the disparity in the outcome, Johnson suggested the decision may have been influenced by the color of their skin.

Inside the chamber, the proceedings were punctuated by the muffled chants of protesters gathered at the State Capitol. Jones characterized the expulsion as a dangerous precedent, labeling the Republican effort a "lynch mob" aimed at the democratic process rather than individuals. The campaign has drawn sharp condemnation from national figures and the White House, with critics describing the removal of elected officials as an act of disenfranchisement that strips constituents of their voice in the state House.
