In the film, Lee portrays Gloria, an aspiring actress who becomes obsessed with the obscure poetry of Ed Saxberger, played by Willem Dafoe. Despite the sudden nature of her casting, Lee maintains that the character felt destined for her. She worked closely with director Kent Jones to craft a woman defined by nostalgia and a romanticized view of icons like Marlene Dietrich, a persona she feels is increasingly absent from contemporary cinema.
This theatrical release follows the lingering cultural footprint of Lee’s 2023 breakout, Past Lives. While audiences continue to share personal stories of connection regarding her previous work, Lee remains focused on the present. She will balance the launch of Late Fame with her upcoming appearance in the Netflix series The Last House, alongside a developing project titled The Eyes Are the Best Part.
